At the beginning of the Islamic period, and until the X century, the capital of Kerman Province was Sirjan, a town located at a strategic point on the roads east to Shiraz and south to Bandar Abbas. Besieged from 1393 to 1396 by Tamerlane's army, the castle of Sirjan - of which a few remains are still visible - finally fell, and its inhabitants were deported. Partially occupied again in the XIV century, the site was then abandoned; the modern town of Sirjan is built very near the old one.
