Kanka
On the outskirts of Eltamgali village, 80km southeast of Tashkent, are the archaeological remains of Kanka, the earliest incarnation of Tashkent. The vast site, which has been only partially excavated, is clearly demarcated with defensive walls, ditches and a large citadel which at one stage would have risen more than 35m above the surrounding land. Climbing to the top of the site it is possible to see the footprint of both towers and temples. Archaeologists working on the site are more than happy to show you ceramics, coins and even bones they have unearthed in the most recent phase of digs.
