If you have two days, don't think of it as choosing between Xinaliq and Laza. Visit both, but give each destination the time it deserves. Xinaliq is about history, mountain scenery and village life. Laza is more about waterfalls, hiking and dramatic landscapes. They complement each other beautifully, but trying to rush through both in a single day means you'll never really experience either.

We actually tried to combine them during a one-day excursion from Baku. It was possible, but by the time we reached Laza we were exhausted and had barely an hour to walk around before turning back. Looking back, we should have chosen one destination and enjoyed it properly.

Many first-time visitors assume that because the villages are relatively close "as the crow flies." In reality the mountains completely separate them. Unless you're trekking, there's no shortcut between the two.

The drives are also quite different. The road to Xinaliq gradually climbs into increasingly dramatic high mountains and feels like a journey into one of the Caucasus' oldest settlements. Laza, on the other hand, is famous for its waterfalls, steep cliffs and hiking trails beneath Shahdag. They offer very different experiences despite being in the same general region.

Good to know. We were hoping there might be some mountain road connecting the two villages.

They may look close on the map, but they're on opposite sides of the mountains and there isn't a direct road connecting them. Xinaliq is reached from Quba, while Laza is approached from the Qusar side via Shahdag. You have to return almost all the way back before driving to the other valley.

We considered doing both in one day and quickly realised we'd spend most of the time behind the wheel instead of enjoying either place. In the end we visited Xinaliq one day, stayed overnight in Quba, then drove to Laza the following morning. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip because both places deserve unhurried exploration.

We're planning a road trip through northern Azerbaijan and would love to visit both Xinaliq and Laza. Looking at the map they don't seem very far apart, but Google suggests quite a long journey between them. Is it realistic to combine both in one day, or should we treat them as two separate destinations?
