Secular medieval architecture

Two types of secular medieval building will attract the attention of visitors: castles and caravanserais. Unlike the churches, neither is distinctively Armenian. Essentially Armenia's castles were sited and built according to the general thinking in castle design of the day and followed the same principles as applied throughout Europe. Caravanserais were built along the main east-west trade routes to provide secure lodging for merchants and their pack animals. They are generally rectangular and sometimes surprisingly large, reflecting just how important this trade was. Only a single, fairly small, door was provided so that the caravanserai would be easily defensible against robbers. Inside there were rows of stalls with feeding troughs for animals and booths for the merchants.
