A lot of people compare Shahrisabz to Samarkand, but I don't think that's the right comparison.

For me, it's more like visiting Windsor when you're already in London, or Toledo from Madrid. You don't go because it's "better." You go because it adds another layer to your understanding of the country.

Whether that's worth giving up a relaxed day in Samarkand is really a personal choice.

I don't regret visiting, but if I had those four nights again I'd spend the extra day in Samarkand.

By the fourth day we'd discovered cafés we liked, started recognising streets and found ourselves returning to places at different times of day. It was the first city in Uzbekistan where we stopped feeling like tourists who were constantly trying to "see everything."

Shahrisabz was pleasant, but it never gave us that feeling.

I suppose it depends whether you're happier collecting another destination or slowing down somewhere you've already fallen in love with.

After visiting, I'd say the answer depends almost entirely on why you're travelling.

If your goal is to see the most spectacular Islamic architecture in Central Asia, then no, Shahrisabz probably won't impress you after Samarkand. The surviving monuments are interesting, but they're more fragmented. You're not going to find another Registan.

But if you're interested in history, especially Timur and the Timurid Empire, I think it's absolutely worth going.

Standing beneath the remains of the Ak-Saray Palace gives you a sense of just how enormous Timur's ambitions were. Even though much of the palace has disappeared, the surviving entrance is astonishing in scale. Looking up at those towering pylons, it's not difficult to imagine what the complex must once have looked like.

Another thing we appreciated was the pace. Samarkand can feel busy, especially around Registan and Shah-i-Zinda. Shahrisabz felt much calmer. We spent time sitting in a small teahouse near the market, wandered around without much of a plan and never felt rushed.

The drive itself was part of the experience. Crossing the mountains between Samarkand and Shahrisabz gave us scenery that was completely different from the rest of our trip.

If I had only two or three days in Uzbekistan, I'd stay in Samarkand.

With four nights, though?

I'd definitely go.
