Car Rental at Issyk-Kul Airport, Where to Stay, and Road Trip Around the Lake

Guys, good evening! Please tell me, is it actually possible to pick up a rental car at Issyk-Kul airport? We’re planning to travel in July, flying from Tashkent. Driving our own car isn’t really an option because we have a small child, and doing an 11–12 hour drive would be difficult. We were thinking of flying in and renting a car. I’ve seen services offering car rentals right at the airport, but the question is whether this is realistic, since the car location is listed as Bishkek.
Another question: are there any recommendations on where to stay if we’ll have a car? We’re mainly interested in comfort and beautiful views, and beaches without huge crowds 🙏🏼 I apologize in advance if these questions have been asked a thousand times already, but I’d be very happy if there are people here who can share recommendations. Thank you in advance.

Super curious about the bits around Tee-Ashuu Pass and Sonkel Lake. Vehicle's a Toyota Prado – should handle it okay, but wanna know what to expect!

Base Camp at Peak Lenin

Yurts are set up there year-round.

The road to get there is good, but after Sary-Mogol it's off-road—our crossover handled it without any issues.

Cost for one night in a yurt: 2000 som, plus breakfast and dinner (very, very hearty meals).

Electricity, hot water.

Shower, toilet, and sink—all fully equipped.

We were there on September 26-27.

Epic Train Ride from Bishkek to Balykchi

And we took the train from Bishkek to Balykchi today.
It's epic

You just can't take your eyes off the views. And when the serpentine started, it was intense—not just from the heat, but the adrenaline rush, with cliffs literally centimeters from the tracks.

But it's pure thrill, respect to the Kyrgyz Railway folks who set this up, both the train itself and the route
If you get a chance, go for it. It's totally worth the time and emotions

3 days around Issyk-Kul on auto

Hi everyone! I need some advice—I can’t quite wrap my head around the best way to explore Issyk-Kul.

Goal: I want those "wow-effect" views—majestic, large-scale landscapes—and I also want to physically experience the place: swimming, hot springs, maybe even a mud lake.

Here’s the plan so far:

We’ll be driving a rental car around Issyk-Kul (a sedan, because renting an SUV is too expensive). I’ve got plenty of driving experience.
We’re not hikers, so no heavy-duty mountain boots—just sneakers.

How would you recommend we proceed?

Option 1: Stick mostly to the main road. Drive to Cholpon-Ata and Karakol, then book half-day jeep tours into the gorges from there. (Do they even offer such tours?)

Option 2: Leave the main road where possible, park the car at spots accessible for a sedan, and hike into the gorges from there. (But how far would we need to walk to reach those beautiful spots from where a sedan can go?)

Here’s what I’m leaning toward:
a) From Cholpon-Ata, take a guided tour into the Semenov and Grigoriev Gorges.
b) From Karakol or Ak-Suu village, book a tour to Altyn-Arashan for the hot springs.
c) Visit the Fairy Tale Canyon and Dead Lake on our own by car.

Am I on the right track? Am I missing anything stunning with that “wow” factor?

Also, I’m not sure how much time is needed to explore the Semenov/Grigoriev/Altyn-Arashan gorges. Can you hike them in an hour, or do you need a 4WD for three hours?
