Well both options (shared taxis and rented vehicles with a driver) work depending on your budget and preference:

Shared Taxis: The most economical choice, but schedules can be unpredictable, and comfort is limited. Also, you need to understand that their objective is to transport people from one point to another as soon as possible. So do not rely that they will make photo stops for you, or show you interesting places. I would hardly call such trip a travel.
Private Cars: Ideal for flexibility and stopping to take photos or explore off-road locations. A 4x4 is necessary, especially for rough sections of the highway.
Tours: Many companies offer guided tours with English-speaking drivers, which can even further enhance your experience. But this is the most expensive option, although the most reliable.

Thank you! I’ll be spending two days exploring the Fann Mountains and Iskanderkul Lake before heading to Dushanbe, Khorog, and Wakhan Valley. I’ve decided to extend my trip by three days to avoid rushing. I really appreciate your valuable suggestions!

If you’re short on time, I’d suggest exploring the Fann Mountains or other nearby valleys closer to Dushanbe. They’re equally stunning and won’t require as much travel time.

Late April is a transitional period for the Pamir region. Some parts of the highway may still be snowy, especially at higher altitudes. However, the roads are usually passable by late spring. If you can postpone your trip to May or early June, you’ll enjoy better weather and accessibility.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll try to extend my trip by another day or two. By the way, is late April a good time to travel the Pamir Highway, or should I consider another period?

Three days won’t be enough for this itinerary. You’ll need at least four days at a minimum since each leg of the journey involves more than 12 hours of driving. To truly enjoy the Pamir Highway and take in the breathtaking scenery, I’d recommend five or more days for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.
