Personally, overnight. Not because there are endless attractions. Because once the day-tour buses leave, the town becomes much quieter. Theother day we walked around after dinner and hardly saw another tourist. That completely changes the way how you feel about the place.

One thing visitors often miss is that Dilijan isn't really designed around tourism in the way places like Sighnaghi or Kazbegi are. People actually live here. Children walk to school. Retired men spend hours playing backgammon in the park. Artists have moved here because they enjoy the slower pace.

If you arrive expecting entertainment every five minutes, you'll probably leave disappointed.

As a landscape photographer I'd tell people not to judge Dilijan by the town itself. The real magic begins once you leave it. The winding roads through the forests, early morning mist, old monasteries tucked between the trees...

That's what I came for. The town simply happened to be the base.

I think the season matters more than people realise. We visited in late October. The forests were unbelievable. Friends of ours went in August and showed us their photos afterwards. It honestly looked like a different place.

Dilijan is one of those places that's easy to misunderstand. People often arrive expecting another old city full of monuments. It isn't.

It's really a mountain town surrounded by forests. The attraction isn't a checklist of famous sights—it's the atmosphere.

We spent nearly an hour sitting in a café overlooking the trees while it rained. Then we wandered through Sharambeyan Street, visited a couple of craft workshops and hiked part of the trail towards Haghartsin Monastery the next morning.

If you enjoy slowing down, you'll probably love Dilijan. If you measure destinations by the number of attractions you can tick off before dinner, you may wonder what the fuss is about.

I'm putting together a one-week itinerary for Armenia.

Almost every tour seems to include Dilijan, but I'm struggling to understand what actually makes it special. Is it somewhere you'd spend a whole day, or is it simply a convenient place to stop for lunch before continuing to Sevan?
