This can be pricey, but it’s worth considering if time is tight.

If you’re walking, the hike from the road closure point (just past the visitor center) to the lake is about 10 km. It’s a straightforward walk along the road and very manageable. Many people do this hike, and the path offers some great views. The hike takes a few hours round trip, but if you want a faster option, renting an e-bike or scooter is ideal. At a comfortable pace, the whole trip can take around an hour.

Hi! Just to clarify, the road to Big Almaty Lake is permanently closed for all motor vehicles. You can only reach it on foot, by bicycle, horseback, or using an electric bike.

Many older blogs still mention driving up, but that information is outdated. The closure has made the area much cleaner and quieter, so it’s definitely worth the effort to go without a car. If you’re planning your visit, I’d suggest starting early in the morning to make the most of the day.

That’s correct—the road closure is here to stay. Big Almaty Lake is a critical source of drinking water, and heavy traffic was causing serious issues, especially on weekends. There were too many vehicles, parking chaos, and concerns about water contamination.

Honestly, I think it was a great move to close the road to cars. Now, visitors can hike, cycle, or even use electric bikes to reach the lake. Without the traffic, the area feels much more tranquil and natural. The hike isn’t too difficult, and the views along the way are incredible. If you can make the time, I’d highly recommend it.
