Definitely Bukhara. It’s just my preference.

I completely agree with that. I spent three days in Bukhara, followed by three days in Samarkand. Perhaps I was just getting tired of all the moving around, but I really didn’t feel the same charm in Samarkand as I did in Bukhara. Plus, in Samarkand, all the landmarks and good restaurants are far apart. Sure, a trip to Uzbekistan wouldn’t be complete without Samarkand, but I still enjoyed Bukhara more. Everything is free to visit there, and you can stroll around the old town, which is mostly car-free. In Samarkand, it felt like I was just checking off boxes on my tourist to-do list.

I visited both Samarkand and Bukhara in September and gave each city two days. In the end, I’d say that if you're not planning on spending too much time admiring the mosaics like described above, one day in each city should be enough. But if you're short on time, Samarkand has fewer landmarks than I expected, and Bukhara is compact enough that you could probably see it all in half a day, given a strong will. Still, I recommend spending a full day in each city—especially if it's hot, as both city centers are beautiful at night when they’re illuminated.

Some people might love the intricate lines and patterns of the mosaics, but it's definitely a matter of taste. The complex itself is massive, but once inside, there's not much to explore—mostly shops, little courtyards, and crowds of tourists.
