Samarkand is a large city with wide streets and big buildings. The landmarks there fit a big city vibe. Bukhara is small, charming, and compact. Even Khiva is even more so, and even more quaint.

If I only had 1-2 days and no further plans to visit Uzbekistan, I’d recommend Samarkand. After all, people don’t come to Uzbekistan for the narrow streets, they come for the architecture and majolica.

I completely agree with that. I spent three days in Bukhara, followed by three days in Samarkand. Perhaps I was just getting tired of all the moving around, but I really didn’t feel the same charm in Samarkand as I did in Bukhara. Plus, in Samarkand, all the landmarks and good restaurants are far apart. Sure, a trip to Uzbekistan wouldn’t be complete without Samarkand, but I still enjoyed Bukhara more. Everything is free to visit there, and you can stroll around the old town, which is mostly car-free. In Samarkand, it felt like I was just checking off boxes on my tourist to-do list.

Bukhara is lovely and cozy, and you can easily see everything in half a day, since everything is close by. Samarkand is undoubtedly grander, but its landmarks are spread out. If you don’t want to rush through, two days would be ideal.

I visited both Samarkand and Bukhara in September and gave each city two days. In the end, I’d say that if you're not planning on spending too much time admiring the mosaics like described above, one day in each city should be enough. But if you're short on time, Samarkand has fewer landmarks than I expected, and Bukhara is compact enough that you could probably see it all in half a day, given a strong will. Still, I recommend spending a full day in each city—especially if it's hot, as both city centers are beautiful at night when they’re illuminated.

What exactly is there to see in Registan apart from the general view? Some people might love the intricate lines and patterns of the mosaics, but it's definitely a matter of taste. The complex itself is massive, but once inside, there's not much to explore—mostly shops, little courtyards, and crowds of tourists. There's a small museum, but even that doesn’t offer much.

I would spend half a day in Samarkand, and the rest of the day in Bukhara.

I've been to both cities, and I agree—Registan is just unforgettable, but Bukhara has a unique magic of its own. I’d recommend spending one day in each. Sleep on the plane!

I also agree about Khiva—it’s one of the best places to visit. But ultimately, the choice is yours!

Bukhara has a more lyrical and cohesive atmosphere, but let's not forget—Registan is still Registan! So honestly, no matter which city you choose, you'll enjoy it.

P.S. You have two days? One day for Bukhara, and one for Samarkand.

Hello everyone! I'm flying from Thailand with a layover in Tashkent, and I have a chance to spend two days there. What would you recommend I visit, Samarkand or Bukhara? I've been to Tashkent before, but I'd like to explore other cities this time. What do you think?
