If you're planning a trip between Khujand and Dushanbe, the most reliable and budget-friendly option is the shared taxi—a staple mode of transport across Tajikistan. Though not glamorous, it's efficient, widely used, and offers a genuine glimpse into local life.

🚗 Getting from Khujand to Dushanbe

Where to Start:
Head to the Khujand bus station early in the morning for the best chance of securing a ride. Here, private drivers wait for passengers heading to Dushanbe and will often approach you first.

How It Works:
Shared taxis only depart once full—typically with 4 passengers for a sedan or up to 6 in a larger vehicle. Once the seats are filled, you'll embark on the scenic but winding 307-kilometer journey through Tajikistan's mountain passes. The drive itself takes about 5 to 6 hours, but the wait to depart can be unpredictable, sometimes lasting up to two hours depending on passenger flow.

Fares & Negotiation:
Drivers often quote high at first—around 200–250 somoni—but a reasonable fare is closer to 120–150 somoni. Haggle politely but firmly. A little bargaining goes a long way.

Safety Tips:
The route features narrow, serpentine mountain roads with minimal guardrails—choose your driver wisely. Avoid overly aggressive drivers and inspect the car’s condition if you can. The vehicles are typically unmarked private cars, not official taxis.

Seating Order:

• First come, first served. Early arrivals usually get the front seat.

• Elderly passengers, women with children, and larger individuals are often offered priority seating.

• If you're seeking comfort or privacy, you can pay for all the seats to ride solo.

Drop-Off Point:

Departure Point:
Head to the Chorbor Passenger Terminal in Dushanbe. You can get there via public buses #3 or #3A from Rudaki Avenue. The best time to arrive is early in the morning to avoid long waits.

Boarding Process:
When you arrive, expect drivers to call out destinations. If you're heading to Khujand, listen for someone shouting “Khujand!” Once you load your bags into a car, you’re considered committed to that driver—others will stop trying to recruit you.

Vehicle Types & Seating:
Most of the shared taxis are standard sedans or larger vehicles like black Opels with third-row seating. A five-seater will carry four passengers; a seven-seater, up to six.

Wait Time & Duration:
Similar to the Khujand route, the drive takes a little over five hours, though again, waiting for the car to fill up may take longer than the journey itself.

Arrival in Khujand:

• We bought Asian Express Bus tickets directly from their bus station. Tickets for a minibus cost 85 somoni each.
• The departure time on our tickets was listed as 8:30 AM, though the official schedule said 8:00 AM. We actually departed at 8:30 AM with only a few passengers onboard.
• We arrived at the new Chorbog Terminal (this seems to be the updated location for Marom and Vodonasos). It’s marked on maps.

At Chorbog, we waited until 9:40 AM for the minibus to fill up with passengers, luggage, and some courier packages. I’m not sure how much the dispatcher charged walk-ins at Chorbog, but I heard taxi drivers were asking around 120 somoni per person for similar trips.

• There was one main stop along the way at Asal Café, closer to Khujand.
• We also made a detour to Istoravshan city center.

We finally reached Khujand’s Sughd Bus Station at 4:00 PM. It was a long ride, but the views were stunning!

Are there scheduled buses?

The Asian Express Bus departs at 8:00 AM from Dushanbe and 7:00 AM from Khujand. Keep in mind the schedule can shift depending on the season.

Plan for about 8 hours on the road, including two stops for food and restroom breaks.
