The Border Service of the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic reports that, in connection with the celebration of the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), border crossing points located on the Kyrgyz–Chinese section of the state border will be temporarily closed:

• Irkeshtam road checkpoint — from 20:00 on February 15, 2026, until February 19, 2026;
• Torugart road checkpoint — from February 17 to February 20, 2026.

The passage of persons, vehicles, and cargo will resume:

• through the Irkeshtam road checkpoint — on February 19, 2026, at 08:00;
• through the Torugart road checkpoint — on February 20, 2026, at 08:00.

The border operates from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Kyrgyz time.

It is not yet known whether this schedule will remain in place year-round.

The Presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have signed a landmark border agreement, leading to the reopening of land communication between the two countries and the resumption of regular air travel. Experts are calling this development a historic event that will significantly enhance the overall stability in Central Asia.

In February, details of the agreement were revealed, outlining the precise borders of the significant Tajik enclave of Vorukh, which is surrounded by Kyrgyzstan's Batken region. The road connecting Vorukh to the main part of Tajikistan has been granted neutral status. Furthermore, the two sides agreed to exchange certain territories; for instance, Bishkek will transfer the village of Dostuk to its neighbor in exchange for the village of Samoniyon and several other plots, totaling an even swap of 142 hectares for 142 hectares.

Following the signing of the agreement, Presidents Emomali Rahmon and Sadyr Japarov inaugurated the land border between their countries via video link. Two border checkpoints, which had been closed since 2021 due to intense clashes, were reopened. The ceremony was quite colorful, with people in traditional costumes from both sides of the border witnessing the lifting of the barriers, followed by warm handshakes and embraces.

Additionally, air travel between the two nations has resumed. On the morning of March 14, a Tajik airline flight departed from Dushanbe to Bishkek, where it was ceremoniously welcomed with a water arch. Passengers were treated to festive traditional pastries known as boorsoks. The first technical flight back to Tajikistan is scheduled for March 16, with subsequent flights planned to occur weekly. Regular bus services are also expected to resume shortly.

The President of Kyrgyzstan has suggested that neighboring countries consider the establishment of a Central Asian version of the Schengen Agreement. According to Japarov, with the resolution of the border dispute between Bishkek and Dushanbe, there are no remaining contentious borders in the region. “Now, Central Asian countries should initiate the process of implementing a visa-free regime among themselves, and for visitors from other states, a unified visa that allows free movement throughout all countries in the region, similar to the Schengen visa,” he stated.
