Could you please clarify. I’m a tourist from Russia, car with Russian plates, driver’s license, international passport. I need to enter from the Jartepa border crossing side and travel along the route Dushanbe – Khorog – Murghab – Osh. I have 6 days for everything. I know about the GBAO permit. What else do I need to arrange in terms of documents for such a trip through Tajikistan/GBAO? Temporary import of the car at the UZ/TJ border?

Entering Tajikistan Through a Land Border

Hi everyone! My partner and I are planning a trip through Central Asia this summer and are considering a day trip to Tajikistan from Uzbekistan. However, we've come across some conflicting information. We know that we don't need a visa since we're from visa-exempt countries, but we read somewhere that we might require written permission from the Tajik government to cross the land border. We've reached out to the embassies for clarification but haven’t received a response yet. Has anyone traveled to Tajikistan by land recently? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Passes for GBAO and Registration in Tajikistan

I went to the OVIR office in Dushanbe on Tursunzade today to get a GBAO permit. They charged 40 somoni and told me to return in an hour. OVIR also works on Saturdays, from 8 AM until midday. So no problems at all with getting permits, no delays, they issue permits same day

Registration in Tajikistan

We recently returned from a trip through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

In Tajikistan, you can stay without registration for up to 10 days, including the days of entry, exit, and weekends.
In Uzbekistan, you can stay without registration for three working days, not counting the day of entry. Weekends and Uzbek public holidays do not count toward these three days. (I verified this with officials at various borders in both Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.)

We managed a 12-day journey from Osh to Urgench via the Fergana Valley and Tajikistan, perfectly timing it so no registration was required anywhere.

Border crossings have become very easy. No lengthy inspections, no forms to fill out, no queues. It takes about 30 minutes to cross from one country to another.

At the Osh-Andijan crossing, there was a queue of locals with goods, but tourists are always prioritized. Uzbek-Tajik crossings are even faster. The Beshrik-Kanibadam crossing is open 24/7, as is the international crossing between Samarkand and Penjikent. Large, very cheap buses now run from these crossings to Uzbek cities during the day.
