InterContinental Almaty hotel is without a doubt one of the best hotels in Almaty and, probably, in Kazakhstan, but quality comes at expense. The location of the hotel was always a theme of hot debates. Business travelers count it as a good and others are not. Still it is a 20-30 minutes walk into the city centre with its trendy restaurants, bars and etc. It is located the opposite the Presidential Palace in Almaty’s Republic Square.
Hotel is safe and secure. From the moment you arrive to the hotel, the vehicle you are in is stopped and the underneath is checked with a mirror with the metal detector and security guard at the entrance, you realize this hotel takes the security and safety of its guest very seriously. About a 20-minute drive away, Kok Tobe Mountain offers magnificent views of Almaty. Chimbulak Ski Resort is about 14 miles from the InterContinental.
The atrium style lobby with palm trees and glass exterior is large and slightly old fashioned but quite spacious. There is a car service at concierge's desk. Please note that the car service is on an average 2.5 times more expensive than local cabs and the drivers don’t really speak English so you are better of getting your origin and destination written down in russian by the concierge and taking a local taxi. Because of the Lufthansa crew accommodates in this hotel you can find the Lufthansa and KLM check-in counters in the lobby which makes your departure easier if you are flying with these airlines.
The rooms are nice (some are larger than the others), generally can be counted as of a decent size, neat and clean and have tea & coffee making facilities plus mini fridge. The working desks are large, well organized with plenty of electrical sockets. The rooms have plenty of wardrobe space. All include a flat-screen cable TV, minibar and sitting area with high-quality sofas. The TV channel selection has one or two english entertainment channels other than the news which is a nice welcome. Free Wi-Fi is available in the rooms, lobby and parking area as well as faster internet access via cable (WLAN) but for a fee. Wi-Fi is of reasonable speed (recently upgraded as before it was a bit slow), adequate for work. Iron and ironing board also provided. Air conditioning is quiet and efficient.
There are great views of the mountains from the front rooms. Club rooms are very spacious and modern with access to a club lounge on the top floor. The bathroom is reasonably big, but unfortunately the hotel does not have rooms with walk-in shower. The bath tub is also the shower and has a glass sliding door making it uninviting to have a bath.
Plenty of choice of restaurants and bars within the hotel and even it's own chocolate shop! Breakfast to suit all tastes from Sushi to bacon and eggs at the Asian Cafe' (breakfast and lunch place). French cuisine at the Belvedere Grill Room’s rooftop terrace. Turkish specialties are served at the Bosphorus Restaurant. Do not expect too many vegetarian options. Please bear in your mind that the food is generally okay but expensive by Kazakh standards. Because of many flights out of Almaty are in the middle of the night and the hotel thoughtfully provides good coffee, croissant and cakes for departing guests.
The Ankara Spa includes an indoor swimming pool, Turkish bath and massage treatments. Sauna and Turkish hammams are common for men and women. Guests enjoy a fully equipped gym and tennis court. The fitness center may seem a bit outdated for equipments but still can be counted as a good.
Our recommendation: Do request a room with a view to the Tian Shan mountains! Make sure you specify non-smoking room when booking if you are non-smoker! Don't take the rooms in front of elevator!
