TURKMENABAT - KOYTENDAG - TURKMENABAT - MARY - ASHGABAT

Day 1    Uzbekistan => border => Turkmenabat  

Arrival to Turkmen-Uzbek border from Bukhara (around 2 hours drive from Bukhara to border). Border formalities (1 hour) and meeting with your guide. You will be transfered to Turkmenabat (45 min). On the way you will cross Amur Daria river across the pontoon bridge. Check in to Jeyhun Hotel and lunch at Kerven restaurant. Then short excursion across the city with the visit to Lebap regional museum, and horse complex where you could see the famous Ahal Teke horses. 

Day 2    Turkmenabat - Koytendag  

After breaksfast a transfer by car to Kugitang (440 km). Kugitang (Kugitang means, roughly, 'Difficult-to-Cross Mountains') is the most impressive and pristine of Turkmenistan’s nature reserves. Set up in 1986 to protect the Kugitang mountain range and its unique ecosystem. Its extent includes the country’s highest peak, Airybaba (3137m), several huge canyons, rich forests, mountain streams, caves and the unique Dinosaur Plateau. On the way to reserve you will make a photo-stop to visit Astana-Baba Mausoleum and Alamberdar Mausoleum. These mausoleums are one of the best examples of 11th-centuiy architecture in Turkmenistan. Half-way the lunch will be organised in Atamyrat town (220 km) to allow you a short rest from a road. Arrival to Koytendag and stayin in Koytendag camp/recreation centre. Overnight 

Day 3    Koytendag  

Breakfast and excursion to the mountains, visit to Kyrk Gyz (Forty Girl) Cave, located in a spectacular canyon and containing an unmarked tomb. Then proceed to Dinosaur Plateau where you will find the prints left during the Jurassic period by a species called Megalosauripus. There are more than 400 prints visible on a steep incline of limestone, the largest of which has a diameter of 80cm. Around Kugitang, more than 2500 prints have been found. Also check Umbar-Dere waterfall. Return to camp. Overnight.  

Day 4    Koytendag - Turkmenabat

Start all the way back to Turkmenabat (45 min). On the way visit Gaynar Baba hydrogen-sulfide-rich spring located уast of Karlyuk, on the southern edge of the Kugitang range and quite popular as a local bathing place. Lunch in Atamyrat town. Return to Turkmenabat and check into Jeyhun hotel. 

Day 5    Turkmenabat - Mary - Ashgabat

Breakfast.  Drive towards Bayramaly (30km) to explore ancient Merv – 'Queen of the world' that was one of the most important capitals of Islam along with Baghdad, Cairo and Damascus. Sightseeing of ancient Merv includes: Gyz Gala & Oglan Gala (VI-VII), Complex of Askhabs (VIII-XIV), Gyaur Gala (IV BC), Buddist Complex (IV-VI), Beni Makhan Mosque - first Mosque built in Central Asia. Have a lunch in Bayramaly. Then transfer to Mary where you will take a flight to Ashgabat (45 min). Checking into Ak Altyn hotel. Overnight

Day 6    Ashgabat

First half of the day will be spent sightseeing the major landmarks of Ashgabat - the capital and largest city of Turkmenistan. Ashgabat is a relatively young city, growing out of a village of the same name established by Russian officers in 1881 after the Battle of Geok Tepe. It is not far from the site of Nisa, the ancient capital of the Parthian Empire. Within this tour you will visit Ten Years of Independence Park, Turkmenbashy Square with marble-faced Ruhyyet Palaceand gold-domed Turkmenbashy Palace. The statue in front of Turkmenistan's Justice Ministry and Supreme Court building is an image of Niyazov's mother, Gurbansoltan Eje, holding the scales of justice in her right hand. You will be also taken to grandious Square of Revival (Galkynysh) - a new administrative, business and cultural center of Ashgabat. Have a stroll along Ylham (Inspiration) Park.

After you will be taken for an excursion outside Ashgabat (15km west of capital) to visit Nissa fortress: the Parthian site of Old Nisa, known as Konye Nusay in Turkmen. Old Nisa has a striking geographical location, on top of a small hill on the southeast side of the village, offering splendid views towards the Kopet Dag Mountains to the south. On the way back pay a visit to The National Museum in Berzengi that contains the major treasures discovered from all over the country. The most interesting expositions are represented in archeology and ethnography departments. Taking an evening flight home or staying overnight for a next day fligth.
