Mary – Turkmenabat – Bukhara – Nurata – Samarkand – Tashkent - Ferghana - Osh
This is a shorter leg of what might be a greater tour along Iran->Turkmenistan->Uzbekistan->Kyrgyzstan line. Please note that this is the sample of itinerary and we can tailor any tour based on your request with possible deviations to other Stan countries, extra places or activities of your immediate interest. Day 1 Iran -Turkmenistan border - Mary
Meet the tourists at the Sarahs border. Drive to Mary city and overnight at Margush hotel.
Day 2 Mary - Merv - Mary
Breakfast. Drive to Bayramaly (30km) to explore ancient Merv – 'Queen of the world' that was one of the most important capitals of Islam along with Baghdad, Cairo and Damascus. Sightseeing of ancient Merv includes: Gyz Gala & Oglan Gala (VI-VII), Complex of Askhabs (VIII-XIV), Gyaur Gala (IV BC), Buddist Complex (IV-VI), Beni Makhan Mosque - first Mosque built in Central Asia. Before lunch drive back to the Hotel. Free time for explore Mary where you can visit: The Central Theatre, The Convention & Conference Center "Ruhiyet Koshgi", Park & Monument of Mollanepes - the National Classic Poet, near the hotel regional museum.
Day 3 Mary - Turkmenabat
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Turkmenabat. Check in to Jeyhun Hotel. Free time for explore the Turkmenabat city: main attractions: wedding palace, Kenine theatre, old museum of ethnography, Lebap regional museum.
Day 4 Turkmenabat
Breakfast. Drive to Astana Baba mausoleum that is a unique structure of its kind built by medieval Zemm, north-west to the Kerki city. Locals believe that the mausoleum is the place of burial of a standard bearer of the Prophet. Kerki is a one of the largest district of Lebap province. Kerky is rich in archaeological sites. The most impressive monument is the fortress called Sultanyaz Gala (40km from the highway Turkmenabat-Kerki). It is also knownas a fortress Seidi, named in honor of the Turkmen classical writer Seyitnazar Seidi. Lunch at a local cafe, try grilled fish from the river Amu Darya. Another monument to visit today is the Alamberdar mausoleum dated by XI century. It is located 12 km north-west of Kerki. It is the largest preserved monument among the earliest buildings in Khorasan (Iran). While there is no definitive answer as to the figure for whom the mausoleum was built, written sources record that the last Samanid ruler, Abu Ibrahim Ismail Muntazir, was killed in this general area in 1004. Some historians suggest that Alamberdar might be the symbolic mausoleum of Muntazir. Drive back to Turkmenabat city. Overnight at Jeyhun hotel.
Day 5 Turkmenabat - Bukhara
Breakfast in the hotel. Transfer (45 min) to Farap-Alat border with Uzbekistan. You will cross Amur Daria river across the pontoon bridge. Border formalities (1 hour) and transfer to Bukhara (2 hours). Hotel check in. Free time. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 6 Bukhara
Breakfast in the hotel. Full day in Bukhara. AM portion of city tour for 4 hrs with visits to the Ark Fortress (I-XX CC), Bolo Hauz Mosque (XVIII C), Samanids Mausoleum (IX-X CC), Chashma-Ayub Mausoleum (XII-XVI CC). Lunch. PM portion of s/s tour on foot along the old town of Bukhara from Poi-Kalyan complex with Kalyan Minaret (XII C) through orient bazaars with three trade domes of Toki Zargaron (XV C), Toki Sarrafon (XVI C), Toki Telpak Furushon (XVI C), Ulugbek Madrassah (XV C), Abdulazizkhan Madrassah (XVII C) to the Lyabi Hauz complex (XVI -XVII CC). Night in Bukhara.
Day 7 Bukhara
Breakfast in the hotel. Today we drive outside Bukhara for sightseeing: Baghautdin Nakhshbandi Complex – a center of Sufism (XIV-XVI CC, 14 km outside the town), Sitorai Mokhi Khosa – summer residence of the last Emir of Bukhara (XIX-XX, 4 km outside the town). Afternoon visit to the Chor Bakr Necropolis (XVI-XX CC, 10 km outside the town), back to Bukhara and a visit to the Chor-Minor (Four Minarets, XIX C). Overnight in a hotel.
Day 8 Bukhara – Nurata – Base Camp (Kizilkum Desert)
Breakfast in the hotel. Drive to Nurata (185km, 3hrs.) Enjoy guided tour around Nurata town for 2 hrs. En route: ruins and fortifications remained after Alexander the Great, saint spring and medieval mosque Namazgokh. Transfer to the base camp (65km, 1.5hrs.). Camel riding instructions and then camel riding. Overnight in yurts (huts).
Day 9 Base Camp (Kizilkum Desert) – Samarqand
After breakfast camel riding to the Aydarkul Lake for fishing and swimming with picnic lunch. PM transfer to Samarkand (290km, 4hrs.) Arrive Samarqand and hotel check-in. Night in Samarqand.
Day 10 Samarqand
Breakfast in the hotel. Sightseeing in Samarkand: Registan Square (XV-XVII CC), Shakhi Zinda Necropolis (XI-XX CC) and Bibi Khanum Mosque (XIV-XV CC). Overnight in a hotel.
Day 11 Samarqand
Full day sightseeing of Samarqand includes the visits Excavation of an ancient city and museum of Afrosiab, Tombstone of Saint Daniyar. Afternoon sightseeing Samarkand - visit "Samarkand-Bukhara Silk Carpets" factory, where you can observe the whole process of weaving silk carpets based on “handmade” technology. Night in Samarqand
Day 12 Samarkand – Tashkent
Continue sightseeing Samarkand - visit Gur Emir Mausoleum (tomb of Tamerlane), Ulugbek Observatory (XV C) and Samarkand oriental bazaar. At 16:20 transfer to the railway station to get the express 'Afrosiyob' train departing to Tashkent at 17:00. Arrival to Tashkent at 19:10. Transfer to the hotel. Night in Tashkent
Day 13 Tashkent
Breakfast in the hotel. Sightseeing tour of Tashkent to the old and new parts of the city: Amir Timur Square, Applied Art Museum, Earthquake Memorial, Abdul Kasim Madrassah Alisher Navoi National Park, Independence Square. Afternoon visit to the older part of the city at Hast-Imam Plaza: Barak-Khan Medressa (16th c) - headquarter of the Sunni Mufti of ex-Sogdian Central Asia & Kazakhstan. It is interesting with its mosaic and Arabic calligraphy dated late 16 century. Barakhan Madrassah, which accommodates the Clerical Board of Central Asian Moslems, and its famous Library, with over 30.000 books, 3500 manuscripts and the precious sample of the Holy Koran, written by the fourth Caliph Osman and bearing stains of his blood on its pages. Brick facade and the intricately carved doors made by Samarqand craftsmen, Tilla Sheikh Mosque & Library (if Library is open you can see Original Koran!), then visit to Tashkent Metro and Chorsu oriental bazaar. Night in Tashkent.
Day 14 Tashkent - Fergana Valley
Breakfast in the hotel. Drive to Fergana Valley (340 km) by sedan cars. First stop in Kokand town (250 km) to visit Khudyarkhan Palace and Jome Mosque and then next stop in Rishtan town (45 km), famous for ceramic production where you will visit the house of a famous ceramic master. Drive on to Ferghana (45 km). Check-in at the hotel. Night in Fergana
Day 15 Ferghana – Osh
Breakfast in the hotel. Drive to the Uzbekistan-Kyrgyzstan border (140 km) and clear the formalities at the border after which you will be met by the Kyrgyz guide and transferred to Osh city.
