Opera and Ballet Theatre, Yerevan

The Opera and Ballet Theatre stands as one of Armenia’s most iconic architectural and cultural landmarks. Nestled in the very heart of Yerevan, this remarkable structure was the brainchild of renowned architect Alexander Tamanian. His visionary design seamlessly unites two performance halls within a single, sweeping semicircular edifice, executed in a manner that remains both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition. In crafting this artistic masterpiece, Tamanian drew inspiration from the finest elements of medieval Armenian architecture, while incorporating stylized motifs from the nation’s rich heritage of ornamental design.

Construction of the theatre’s main performance space was completed in 1939. Later, in 1963, the building was expanded with the addition of a grand hall for the philharmonic society. The Opera House as it exists today took its final form following an extensive renovation in 1980. With a seating capacity of 1,260 in the theatre and 1,400 in the philharmonic hall, both venues are designed in the style of an amphitheatre, celebrated for their exceptional acoustics. The architectural project earned international acclaim, receiving the prestigious Grand Prix at the 1937 Paris International Exhibition.

The square fronting the Opera House adds further cultural depth to the site. It features striking monuments to poet Hovhannes Tumanyan and composer Alexander Spendiaryan—figures whose work helped shape Armenian literature and music. Nearby, another statue honors the world-renowned composer Aram Khachaturian, whose name also graces one of the halls inside the theatre. Adjacent to the square lies a tranquil swan lake, while the surrounding area is enlivened by a collection of charming cafés. These popular spots have become a beloved gathering place for Yerevan’s vibrant youth, adding a modern energy to the theatre’s historic and artistic ambiance.
