The Alexander Nevsky Church

The Alexander Nevsky Church in Ganja, named in honor of the famous Russian saint, is located on the site of an old cemetery. Built in 1887, the church was funded through charitable contributions from both local Orthodox Christians and Muslims. Constructed from red brick in the Byzantine architectural style, it is regarded as one of the oldest surviving Orthodox churches in Azerbaijan.

It is important to note that in 1931, the church was seized by the Soviet government and, between 1935 and 1938, it served as a museum. Only in 1946 was the church returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. In 2017, the church underwent a thorough restoration to mark its 130th anniversary.

Today, visitors to the church can admire its stunning interior, which includes icons of Saint Alexander Nevsky and Saint Mary Magdalene. If you find yourself in Ganja, a visit to this historic church is a must to appreciate both its architectural beauty and its rich history.
