Imamzade Mausoleum, Nakhihevan

The term “Imamzade” translates to “descendant of an imam” or “born of an imam.” The complexes bearing this name, erected in various regions of the autonomous republic, have served as centers of attraction for both locals and visitors alike for centuries. Today, the Imamzade complex in the city of Nakhchivan stands as one of the most frequented sites.

Located in the southeastern part of Nakhchivan city, the Imamzade complex is one of the most remarkable historical and architectural monuments of the 18th century. The structure itself comprises a series of three distinct buildings, constructed in the architectural style of the Safavid era. On the lower part of the monument, crafted from red and dark purple bricks, an epigraphic inscription can be found, prominently mentioning the name of God multiple times. Inside the mausoleum lies a grave that attracts numerous pilgrims daily.

While it is not definitively known to whom this grave belongs, local residents believe it to be the final resting place of the son of the eighth Shia imam, Imam Reza. Adjacent to the tomb, the building houses the remains of the descendants of the Nakhchivan khans. Furthermore, this complex, which is regularly studied by researchers, holds significant architectural interest and continues to fascinate tourists.
