The town of Akhaltsikhe is bisected by the Poçkhovi River, a tributary of the mighty Kura. This waterway, along with a bustling highway, effectively divides the settlement into two main areas: the hilly northern section known as the Left Bank and the flatter, southern expanse referred to as the Right Bank.
The primary landmark of the city is the Rabat Fortress, which stands proudly at the center of town. Adjacent to the fortress is a small square that serves as a crucial transportation hub, connecting various routes and providing a gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
The main thoroughfare is Tamarashvili Street, which runs directly beneath the fortress hill and is home to the local bus station. From the square, you can take a turn under the railway bridge and find yourself on the hill leading to the fortress entrance. To reach the Right Bank, simply cross the Poçkhovi Bridge, and you will arrive on Kostava Street—a pleasant 15-minute walk. Along the way, you will encounter a quaint little park, a statue of Queen Tamar, and the church bearing her name. If you walk around the church to the left, you will find yourself on Didimamishvili Street, which runs parallel to Rustaveli Street—offering access to the road leading to Vardzia.
Continuing straight along Kostava Street and taking a left turn will lead you to Natanadze Street. After about 100 meters, you will come across the post office, with a park located just behind it.
As you stroll around the park, take a moment to admire the Dramatic Theatre, which is located nearby, followed by the police station on Rustaveli Street.
If you walk from the square along Kostava Street for about 100 meters and then turn right onto Ladzé Street, you will arrive at the local market. This vibrant marketplace is always buzzing with activity, offering a wide array of dairy products, cheeses, wines, clothing, and souvenirs. Bargaining is highly encouraged here, as vendors are eager to engage with tourists and often provide excellent discounts, especially on seasonal fruits and vegetables. After meandering through the market, if you continue for another 350 meters along this street, you will arrive at the Armenian church, a beautiful addition to your exploration of Akhaltsikhe.
