Petra Fortress (Petrescihe)

The most renowned fortress-castle in the vicinity of Borjomi is Petra, which has been known by various names throughout the centuries, including the fortress of Kverbila. The remnants of this ancient structure are perched on a cliff in the Borjomi Gorge, directly across from the Romanov family’s palace in Likani. As you approach the Borjomi Gorge, the fortress is visible from afar, but taking the time to get closer and explore the ancient ruins is truly worthwhile.

The exact date of the fortress’s construction remains uncertain. Historically, it served as the stronghold of the Avalishvili princes, strategically blocking the road into the gorge. Following the Turkish conquest of the fortress in the late 16th century, it became home to a Turkish garrison. The architecture of Petra is particularly striking, characterized by its prominent upper section and several tiers below, which are now overgrown with shrubs. Constructed from large pebbles, the fortress has unfortunately succumbed to the ravages of time, leading to its gradual deterioration.

How to Get There: The easiest route is from the Romanov Palace in Likani. From Borjomi, visitors can approach the fortress via the right bank of the Kura River, walking along the railway toward the fortress before turning onto a wide path that ascends to the left. This very path may have been used by people in medieval times to reach the castle.
