Georgia Ferry Services

N.B. Please be advised that due to ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, at present, all passenger ferry services to and from Georgia have been suspended.

Traveling to Georgia by boat is a unique and scenic way to arrive, particularly through its bustling harbor cities, Poti and Batumi. Batumi, in particular, stands out as a vibrant tourist destination and a gateway to the rich experiences Georgia has to offer.

Currently, there are two main routes for ferry travel to Georgia: from the Russian port of Sochi via the fast vessels known as “Kometa,” and from the Ukrainian port of Ilichevsk. Each route offers distinct advantages, so let’s delve deeper into the details of these ferry services.

Kometa Passenger Ships from Sochi, Russia

City of departure Departure days Departure time City of destination
Sochi Tue 10.00 (check-in at 09:00) Batumi
Batumi Mon 11.30 (check-in at 10:30) Sochi

The Kometa ferry operates exclusively between Sochi and Batumi. With a capacity of 114 passengers, this ferry journey typically lasts about 5 hours, although travel time can vary based on weather conditions. Tickets can be purchased at the cash desk No. 3 at the Sochi sea station or at the Batumi seaport, and advanced bookings are available with a purchase deadline of one day before departure. This option is particularly suitable for independent travelers with light luggage, as the weight limit is set at 20 kilograms; any excess baggage will incur additional charges. For ticket bookings or further inquiries, you can reach out at Batumi: +995 593 333 966 or Sochi: +7918 409 1296.

Ferry Services from Ukraine (Chernomorsk) to Georgia

Ferry services connecting Ukrainian and Georgian ports also accommodate vehicles and baggage. Departing from Chernomorsk (formerly Illichivsk), located approximately 20 km from Odessa, these ferries run to Batumi 3 to 4 times a week.

Departure times are subject to frequent changes due to various factors, including the operational capacity of the ports, weather conditions, and customs control procedures, which can lead to unpredictable travel durations. The trip typically takes around 48 hours. However, travelers should be aware that this option may come with a busy schedule and variable service quality. For more information on ferry schedules and services, you can contact Georgia at +995 422 274 119 or Ukraine at +380 482 348 296. Burgas-Batumi-Burgas Ferry Service

In the summer of 2021, a new ferry service was launched between Bulgaria and Georgia, allowing for travel from Burgas to Batumi on a comfortable ferry that operates once a week. The “Druzhba” ferry, which translates to “friendship” in Russian, has been facilitating connections between Bulgaria and Georgia since 2014. In July 2022, the new ferry named “Vilnius” commenced operations.

This ferry is notable for being one of the largest vessels in the world dedicated to passenger and cargo transport, operated by the Ukrainian company Ukrferry. It can accommodate up to 108 passengers in various cabin types, including 4-bed and 2-bed cabins, as well as junior suites and suites. The ferry features two decks capable of holding at least 50 universal containers and up to 50 heavy vehicles. Passengers can enjoy amenities such as a lounge, bar, and a children’s playroom during their journey.

Ticket Booking Information

The ferry company offers two types of bookings: “guaranteed” and “non-guaranteed.” A guaranteed booking is confirmed upon one-time payment via debit or credit card, with the funds transferred to the company’s account. If your bank takes several days to process the transaction or if you opt for a bank transfer, your booking will be classified as non-guaranteed. It is essential that the payment reaches the company’s account at least 72 hours before departure; otherwise, the booking will be automatically canceled. Therefore, it is advisable to arrange your ticket purchases well in advance and maintain communication with the sales offices. For detailed information on tariffs and booking procedures, please visit the official website: http://www.pbm.bg/tariff.

In the summer of 2022, the ferry operates weekly, with travel time ranging from 2 to 3 days in one direction. The ticket office in Batumi is conveniently located at St. Makatsaria 9, adjacent to the local port.

It is important to note that ferries will only set sail in favorable weather conditions, and schedules may vary with the seasons.

Ultimately, the choice of ferry service is yours to make. Whichever option you select, we wish you a delightful journey filled with pleasant weather and fair winds!
