Tbilisi Aerial Tramway

The Tbilisi Aerial Tramway is one of the capital’s most beloved tourist attractions, offering both convenience and unforgettable views. The journey begins in the picturesque Rike Park and ascends gracefully to the historic Narikala Fortress perched high on a hilltop. This aerial route opened to the public in 2012, and by 2017, the cable cars were updated with modern cabins to ensure a more comfortable experience.

Renowned for its safety, the ride is smooth and steady, free of jolts or sudden stops—an ideal way to take in the city’s charm from above. Tbilisi is home to two aerial cableways and a funicular. The second cableway operates in Vake Park and transports visitors to the serene Turtle Lake. Meanwhile, the Mtatsminda Funicular takes passengers up the mountain to the Mtatsminda amusement park, a favorite destination for families and sightseers alike.

Unlike the longer Argo Cable Car in Batumi, Tbilisi’s tramway covers a modest distance of 600 meters. The full ride to the top takes just about two minutes. The system currently operates with seven cabins, each designed to carry up to eight passengers. During peak hours, all seats are filled regardless of whether riders are part of the same group, to ensure efficient flow. The cabins are fitted with soft side benches, transparent walls for panoramic views, and automatic doors for easy access.

The lower station is conveniently located in Rike Park, a vibrant space popular among locals and tourists. Here, visitors can stroll along tree-lined paths, relax by musical fountains, and explore several nearby landmarks such as the futuristic Bridge of Peace and the Presidential Palace. The park is ideal for families, offering playgrounds, climbing walls, cozy cafés, and stylish restaurants.

At the upper station, passengers are greeted by a scenic observation deck that offers sweeping views over Tbilisi’s diverse architectural landscape. It’s the perfect spot for photography lovers and those seeking a moment of peaceful contemplation. The viewpoint is open to the public at no charge, and there is no time limit for how long visitors can stay. However, there are no shops or kiosks at the top, so it’s advisable to bring along water or snacks.

From the observation point, one can take a short walk to the ancient Narikala Fortress or the striking 20-meter-high statue of Kartlis Deda, also known as the “Mother of Georgia.” This monumental figure, with a sword in one hand and a bowl of wine in the other, has come to symbolize the spirit of Tbilisi—fierce yet hospitable.

To descend, visitors may either take the cable car back down or follow the winding cobbled streets on foot through the city’s historic neighborhoods, revealing yet another charming layer of Tbilisi’s character.

Operating Hours
The Tbilisi Aerial Tramway runs daily from 10:00 AM to between 10:00 PM and midnight, depending on the season and demand.

Ticket Prices (2025)
A one-way ticket costs 2.5 GEL. Please note that payments can only be made using the MetroMoney transport card, which must be purchased in advance for 2 GEL and loaded with sufficient funds.

How to get there

The lower station is located in Rike Park, on the left bank of the Kura River, in the heart of the city. It’s easily accessible from any part of Tbilisi. From Ortachala Bus Station, it takes about 10 minutes by car, while the trip from the main railway station is around 10–15 minutes.

If you prefer public transport, get off at the “Europe Square” bus stop. Payments on public transport can also be made using the MetroMoney card, or in cash. The card is available at orange self-service terminals and can be used on buses, metro lines, and the cable car. If paying in cash, simply drop a 50 tetri coin into the onboard machine, which will issue a paper ticket—be sure to keep it for the duration of your ride.

The nearest metro station to Rike Park is Avlabari, just a 6-minute walk away.
