Almaty, with a population nearing 2 million, spans an area of 683 square kilometers. The city is administratively divided into eight districts: Alatau, Almaly, Auezov, Bostandyk, Medeu, Nauryzbay, Turksib, and Zhetysu.
For tourists, the best place to stay is Almaly District. This area is the city’s heart, offering a well-developed infrastructure and attractions within walking distance. One of the highlights is the pedestrian section of Zhibek Zholy Street, popularly known as the “Almaty Arbat.” Other notable landmarks in Almaly include the Kazpotrebsoyuz building, the Zenkov Architects’ House, the Opera and Ballet Theater, and the Lermontov Drama Theater. The district also boasts a wide variety of dining options, from Hard Rock Café to sushi bars. Almaly’s southern and eastern borders are conveniently located along metro lines, making it easily accessible. The only downside is the relatively high prices for hotel accommodations in the area.
The largest district by area, Medeu, occupies nearly 40% of Almaty’s territory. Historically, this district contained the original borders of the city, then known as Verny. Today, Medeu District is the epicenter of Almaty’s most famous landmarks. Visitors can explore the Almaty TV Tower, the Palace of the Republic, the Central Museum of Kazakhstan, the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments, the Central Mosque, and the Holy Ascension Cathedral. One of the district’s most vibrant spots is the “Green Bazaar,” a market dating back to the second half of the 19th century. At the southeastern edge of Medeu, picturesque foothills await, including the famous Medeo Gorge with its ice skating rink, as well as the city’s Central Park and Zoo.
Bostandyk District borders the central part of Almaty to the north. One of the major attractions here is Atakent, a vast parkland area beloved by both tourists and locals. Visitors to Bostandyk should also check out the Botanical Garden, the Kasteev Museum of Arts, and the «Fantasy World» amusement park.
Auezov District, located in the western part of the city, offers fewer historical sights, but visitors can still enjoy a stroll through Family Park or along the shores of Sairan Reservoir. For something unique, head to Pravda Street near the «Sary-Arka» market, where street vendors sell vintage items, including rare jewelry and one-of-a-kind souvenirs.
Nauryzbay District, located on the western outskirts of the city, is primarily a residential area with a large private sector. The districts of Alatau, Zhetysu, and Turksib, situated in the northern part of Almaty, are of little interest to tourists.
