Almaty experiences a sharply continental climate, influenced significantly by the mountain-valley air circulation and its elevation zones. This is especially pronounced in the northern part of the city, where the terrain transitions from mountainous slopes to the flat plains. The average annual temperature in Almaty is higher than in other parts of Kazakhstan, yet cooler than other cities located along the 43rd parallel, such as Tbilisi and Barcelona.
Winter in Almaty is relatively mild. A consistent snow cover usually sets in by December, sometimes by mid or late in the month. The snow typically begins to melt by mid-March. January is the coldest month of the year, with an average temperature of -4.7°C (24°F). Steady frost generally lasts for about two months, from the second half of December to the end of February.
By March, the temperatures start to rise above freezing. The city receives the most precipitation during April and May, with occasional bursts of summer heat by late April or early May. If you’re planning a trip during spring, it’s best to visit in mid-season when the fruit and berry trees bloom, and tulip fields outside the city come alive with color.
Summer in Almaty is quite hot and dry. July, the hottest month, sees average temperatures of around +24°C (75°F), though the summer heat can be much more intense. The highest recorded temperature in Almaty reached a scorching +44°C (111°F). The driest period is August. For exploring the city on foot, the beginning or end of summer is more comfortable, as the combination of heat, smog, and traffic jams can make longer walks challenging.
In September, summer lingers in Almaty with gentle sunshine and average temperatures of +18°C (64°F). This makes September an ideal time to visit—the heat has subsided, a rich harvest of local produce is ready, and prices for tourist services begin to drop. The pleasant weather, with temperatures not dipping below +10 to +12°C (50-54°F), usually lasts until the second half of October. The first frosts typically occur in mid-autumn.
By November, Almaty may already see its first snowfall. The average temperature for the month hovers around +2.5°C (36°F), with winter slowly beginning to take hold.
