When to go to Almaty?

Almaty’s climate is moderately continental, with long, cold, and snowy winters. Snow can begin falling as early as October and linger until mid-April, with occasional snowfalls even in May. The coldest month is January. Spring arrives with an abundance of rainfall, especially in April, while summers are hot and humid.

Winter in Almaty is ideal for visiting the high-altitude Medeu complex, enjoying skiing at Shymbulak, or relaxing in the soothing hot springs. Snow in the mountains typically falls by late October or early November, and the ski season lasts from December (in some areas from November) until early March. By mid-March, the snow begins to melt, and temperatures turn positive.

The perfect season for nature excursions starts in April, when Almaty’s orchards, alpine meadows, and fields of tulips bloom. It’s also an excellent time for urban strolls, with mild, comfortable temperatures. However, April and May can be quite rainy.

The hot and dry Almaty summer is ideal for mountain retreats, picnics by Big Almaty Lake, and fishing trips. The temperature often exceeds +30°C, and there have been instances where it reached as high as +44°C.

Early autumn is perhaps the best time to visit Almaty. September is the driest month of the year, and both September and October are picturesque with harvest celebrations held throughout the city. It’s an excellent time for cultural and sightseeing activities. Mountain excursions continue through September and into early October, when the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. The average temperature in September is around +18°C, and in the first half of October, it hovers around +12°C.

If you’re planning to visit Almaty in winter, warm clothing that doesn’t restrict movement is essential, as you’ll likely be active. In any season, it’s wise to carry an umbrella. During summer, despite the heat, a raincoat or windbreaker is recommended, especially if you plan to venture into the mountains or the countryside.

When should you visit Almaty if you want to catch an interesting event? On March 21, the city bursts into celebration for Nauryz, the traditional spring holiday, with festivities and performances. In early May, just outside the city by Lake Alakol, the “Wings of Alakol” birdwatching festival takes place. Summer brings Alpinida, which includes a climb to Nursultan Peak, the contemporary ethnic music festival “Spirit of Tengri,” the eco-ethnic festival FourE, and the Apple Fest harvest festival. In autumn, tourists gather for the “Festive Cauldron” at the Almaty National Cuisine Festival. In December and January, pre-New Year markets add to the holiday cheer.
