The Museum of the First President of Kazakhstan, Astana

Astana boasts a rich variety of attractions. Alongside its architectural and historical landmarks, the city is home to six state museums, with several more privately owned. Among these, one museum stands out in particular—the Museum of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The building housing this museum was once the presidential residence, though since 2004, the «Ak Orda» complex—a more modern and expansive structure—has served as the official residence. Around the same time, the former residence was transformed into the Museum of the First President of Kazakhstan, dedicated to Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Essentially, this museum is a tribute to Kazakhstan’s modern history, marking the period when the nation gained its independence. Established by a presidential decree, the museum welcomed its first visitors under the personal guidance of Nursultan Nazarbayev himself. The exhibits recount the creation of the republic and the pivotal role Nazarbayev played in this historic process. In addition to tours, the museum hosts various events, lectures, and educational activities, contributing to both the scholarly and political discourse of the country.

Within the museum’s walls, visitors can view an array of valuable artifacts: original archival documents of great historical significance, scientific works by the nation’s political figures, rare books and publications (often signed by their distinguished authors), awards, and collections of fascinating gifts presented to both Nazarbayev and the nation. Altogether, the museum holds over 40,000 unique items relating to the history of Kazakhstan’s society and statehood.

One particularly remarkable section of the museum is the collection of awards given to the president. This includes honors bestowed upon him by various nations and international organizations from around the world.

The museum regularly organizes various exhibitions, ranging from art and craftsmanship to scientific achievements and other areas of interest. One of the permanent exhibitions, titled «The Country and the World,» features around 150 items that are particularly intriguing to art historians. These items, mostly gifts to Nazarbayev from heads of state and significant political figures, highlight Kazakhstan’s diplomatic ties and global relationships.

Reaching the Museum of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan is convenient, as it is centrally located in Astana. Any city sightseeing tour typically includes a stop at this museum, and visitors can easily reach it by public transport if they wish. Admission is free, though it is recommended to arrange group tours in advance.
