Abylai Khan’s Throne and Meadow

The nomadic lifestyle, which remained prevalent in the territory of present-day Kazakhstan even into the past century, left behind few historical and architectural monuments. The fewer such relics there are, the more valuable they become. Burabay is rich in natural beauty, but authentic historical sites are rare. Among these cherished landmarks are Abylai Khan’s throne and meadow, some of the most visited locations in the region. The Kazakh people hold this ruler in deep respect and are profoundly interested in everything related to him.

Abylai Khan (1711–1781) was a prominent statesman and the leader of the entire Kazakh Khanate, recognized by nearly all Kazakh tribes. He officially became khan only in 1771, following a vote at a kurultai (assembly) held in Burabay. Even before his election as khan, Abylai was a respected political figure with considerable influence, which only grew over the years. His life unfolded during a challenging era for the Kazakh people, marked by complex relationships with neighboring powers. These included the uncertain policies of the Qing Empire, frequent Jungar raids, clashes with the Kyrgyz, and the forced submission to the Russian Empire.

It is historically documented that Abylai was chosen as khan in the Burabay area. Unconfirmed reports suggest that this took place at his camp, approximately 5 kilometers from the current resort village of Burabay. Today, this is the site of Abylai Khan’s meadow, one of the region’s main attractions. The meadow is graced by an enormous stele erected in 1991 in honor of the ruler’s 280th anniversary.

A legend surrounds the meadow. Many years ago, a giant aided the Kazakh people in defending their lands from enemies. In one fierce battle, he lost all his weapons. In desperation, the giant uprooted trees, wielding them as clubs to fend off his foes. Thus, the meadow was born. While this is just a tale, there is also an intriguing scientific fact about this open area. Scientists claim that the meadow boasts a unique microclimate believed to have health benefits and rejuvenating properties.

Abylai Khan’s meadow is usually teeming with visitors, especially during the warmer months. Benches line the pathways for resting, and during festivals, yurts pop up offering local delicacies and souvenirs. Artisans are frequently present, and the meadow attracts both adults and children alike, particularly with the batur warriors in traditional attire and the berkutchi (hunters with trained eagles), who are happy to pose for memorable photos.

Nearby, there’s a parking lot, though it often fills up quickly, and amenities include cafes and restrooms. To fully enjoy the site, we recommend arriving in the morning, which will also make parking easier, allowing ample time to explore Abylai Khan’s meadow and its surroundings.

The meadow rests at the foot of Mount Kokshetau.

Another nearby popular landmark is Abylai Khan’s Throne, a formation of boulders that resemble a stone throne.

A legend has it that the throne has wish-granting powers. To activate this, one must circle it clockwise seven times, touch it with both hands, and make a wish. While it was once possible to touch the stone, a fence was erected around the throne some years ago to protect it from overly enthusiastic visitors. There are multiple versions of the ritual, and no one knows for certain which is correct, or whether the site truly grants wishes. Some believe the story of the throne’s magic is merely a charming tale to draw tourists.

Regardless, we encourage you to visit this place, walk around the throne a few times, and make a wish. Feel the atmosphere of this historic site, and may your wish come true!

How to Get There Abylai Khan’s meadow and throne are best reached by car. They are just a short 7-kilometer drive along the main road from the village of Burabay.
