Kenesary Khan's Cave

For lovers of long hikes and cycling, a visit to Kenesary Khan’s Cave offers an experience not to be missed. Kenesary Kasymuly, who is regarded as the last ruler of the Kazakh Khanate, entered history as a fierce defender of his people’s independence from Tsarist Russia and the Kokand Khanate (a state that existed across modern Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan during the 18th-19th centuries).

Nestled on the southwestern shore of Lake Borovoe, the cave resembles a yurt, with a diameter reaching up to six meters in places and a height that varies between one and three meters. Historical records suggest that the future khan was born not far from these lands, which he knew intimately and came to love from a young age, especially for its hunting grounds.

According to folk legends, as ruler, Kenesary Khan frequently hunted in Burabay’s forests. If a hunt extended late into the day or if the weather turned, he would stay overnight in the cave rather than returning to his camp. Whether this tale is true or simply lore, the cave remains a popular attraction for visitors.

The cave’s location is remote, accessible only by foot or bicycle, making for a significant trek. Most tourists start their journey from Abylai Khan’s Meadow. It’s worth noting that Kenesary Khan was the grandson of Abylai Khan. The path from the meadow to the cave stretches for five kilometers, beginning with a trail through the forest and then following the scenic edge of Lake Borovoe.

White markers on the trees guide the way, so you won’t lose your path. Along the route, benches provide a chance to rest, and a memorial plaque commemorates Kenesary Khan. Engraved with his years of life and an inscription in Kazakh, the plaque honors him as a defender of his people’s freedom and an enduring example of courage for future generations.

As you approach the cave, a staircase helps you ascend to the rocky elevation where it is located. Once inside, you’ll find a simple but resonant space that feels steeped in history. Stepping back outside, you’ll be treated to the breathtaking views of the forest and Lake Borovoe—perhaps as Kenesary Khan himself once did.

Exploring the cave with a guide will enrich your journey, allowing you to learn more about the life of Kenesary Khan and the history of the Kazakh people. Stories of his struggles and leadership add a layer of meaning to the already striking landscape.

Getting There

You can reach Kenesary Khan’s Cave either by foot or by bike. If you’re traveling by car, it’s best to leave it at the parking area near Abylai Khan’s Meadow. From there, a five-kilometer marked trail will lead you to the cave, ensuring a journey filled with historical resonance and natural beauty.
