Mount Bolektau is considered one of the most breathtaking spots in the Burabay resort area, a must-visit, especially for newcomers. Located near the village of Burabay, this 147-meter-high mountain offers a sweeping view of the resort below. The vistas from Bolektau’s summit, with its remarkable landscape, captivate even the most seasoned travelers. From the mountaintop viewpoint, you can see the famous Zhumbaktas rock, Mount Okzhetpes, and the tranquil waters of Lake Borovoe and Lake Bolshoye Chebachye. Visitors often stroll along the summit, taking photographs, observing nature through binoculars, and soaking in the magnificent surroundings.

In Kazakh, bölek tau translates to “lonely mountain” or “solitary mountain,” fittingly named for its distinctive stand apart from other mountains in the region.

Climbing Mount Bolektau requires no special training or gear, but comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended. If arriving by car, visitors can park at the base of the mountain. The ascent is fairly steep, so taking it slow and being mindful of the path is essential. Pine cones and both small and large rocks are scattered along the trail, and markers are painted on the tree trunks to help hikers stay on course.

As you make your way up Bolektau, you’ll notice large, oddly-shaped stones that seem almost sculpted by some hidden hand. According to local legend, these stones are said to be the teeth of a dragon. Long ago, a massive dragon came to these lands, spreading terror among the inhabitants. The people, seeking safety, hid among the rocks and mountains. But the dragon was relentless, searching every cave for his prey. In one cave, he found a large family hiding. The dragon attacked, but the eldest son bravely defended his loved ones. Though he was no match for the dragon’s might, he sacrificed his life in one final blow, driving his sword into the dragon’s throat. And so, the legend goes, the dragon remained there on the mountain, his mouth forever open.
