Located on the main street of Burabay, the Local History Museum is a fascinating site that shouldn’t be missed. Although modest in size with just three floors, this museum houses a wealth of knowledge and cultural treasures. For an enriched experience, consider taking a guided tour to learn about the rich natural and historical heritage of the region.
The museum’s exhibits span several rooms, each dedicated to different aspects of the area’s history and biodiversity. Step back thousands of years to discover the ancient wildlife that once roamed this land. Regional fauna is displayed not only through captivating visuals but also with lifelike animal models, and even an insect collection showcasing the unique species found in this region.
Another room is devoted to the local birdlife, including wetland and meadow species, many of which are listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book of endangered species. Here, visitors learn about conservation efforts to protect various bird and animal populations. Moving further, you’ll find a vibrant display on Burabay’s plant life, with intricate collections of mushrooms, minerals, and native plants. Models of the Burabay resort area and the Burabay National Nature Park are also on display, offering a glimpse into the broader landscape and attractions.
For an extra fee, visitors can explore the terrarium, a treat especially for children, where a guide introduces the various reptiles, insects, and even a few monkeys that call this space home.
The Local History Museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, closed only on Mondays. Adjacent to the museum is a small zoo featuring around 30 species of animals and birds, including argali, yaks, bison, wolves, wild boars, deer, roe, bears, foxes, ponies, porcupines, ducks, cranes, turkeys, guineafowl, golden eagles, and more.
Herbivores in the zoo are available for feeding, but food for them must be purchased from a kiosk at the zoo entrance—outside food is not allowed. You may also enjoy feeding the squirrels; while not officially zoo residents, they’re nearly tame and often approach visitors for treats.
Throughout the grounds, decorative objects and artistic sculptures create ideal photo opportunities. During the warmer months, the museum and zoo are typically bustling, so plan your visit in advance. This site is perfect for family outings, offering children a fun and educational introduction to the area’s natural and cultural history.
