The Almaty Region will astound you with the breathtaking Charyn Canyon, which is over 12 million years old.
Charyn Canyon is located within the Charyn National Park, established to protect its natural and geological treasures. The park was officially formed on February 23, 2004. It is home to numerous rare and endangered species, many of which are listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan.
Within the park lies the Sarytogay area, where a protected forest shelters one of the world’s most unique trees—the Sogdian Ash. This ancient species has been around since the Paleogene period. There are only two groves of this tree in the world, the second being in North America. The ash grove in Charyn is a particularly important natural monument, protected under UNESCO. The grove itself is about five million years old, making it an extraordinary living relic of the past.
The canyon, carved out by the Charyn River and sculpted by powerful winds over millennia, is a unique natural creation made of clay deposits. Locals often refer to Charyn as the “younger brother” of the Grand Canyon in the United States due to the similarity of their rock formations and landscapes.
The area is famous for its otherworldly scenery. The canyon reaches depths of 200 meters, and the towering cliffs range from 150 to 300 meters high. This natural monument, composed of sedimentary rocks, has stood for 12 million years. The views here are truly awe-inspiring, especially at sunset when the canyon’s walls are bathed in vibrant shades of crimson, pink, and orange. The only sound you’ll hear is the roaring waters of the Charyn River crashing against the steep cliffs below, creating a spectacle that leaves no one unmoved.
In person, this immense gorge, with its valley of multi-colored rock formations, is indescribable. To fully appreciate the canyon from various vantage points and explore the surrounding terrain, it’s best to arrive early in the morning as the park’s area is vast. You can visit the information center, where you’ll find detailed maps of the region and learn about the best places to relax, including a restaurant offering incredible views.
We recommend not only enjoying the panoramic views from the first and second observation decks but also taking a walk to the heart of the canyon and the Valley of Castles. This remarkable valley is filled with rock formations resembling towering fortresses, as if crafted by unknown giants. The Valley of Castles stretches over 2 kilometers in length, and its width varies between 20 and 80 meters in different areas.
If you need a break, there is a tourist base within the canyon where you can rest. However, it’s a good idea to call ahead to inquire about accommodation availability at +7 (727) 349-54-24.
Charyn Canyon is a must-see, with its dramatic landscapes and timeless beauty, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
