The Porous Canyon of Ybykty

Ybykty is a hidden gem of Mangystau—a small canyon spanning several hundred meters, adorned with a network of holes that resemble honeycombs or porous chocolate. Its upper edges are lined with overhanging ledges, and the far end of this narrow corridor is shrouded in shadow, untouched by sunlight. The name Ybykty befits its mysterious charm.

Scientists believe this natural wonder formed around 60 million years ago, during the age of the Neotethys Ocean. These perforations mark the remnants of ancient coral reefs and other marine life, which emerged from the depths over time and were gradually shaped by sun and wind. The canyon itself was carved by an intermittent river that etched its winding path through the rock, and even today, when heavy rains pour over the canyon, streams continue to slowly erode the limestone at its base.

A walk through Ybykty’s porous landscape is an unforgettable experience, comparable only to the beauty of Antelope Canyon in the United States. However, those with trypophobia—the fear of clusters of small holes—might find Ybykty unsettling.

While exploring, it is crucial to stay cautious and avoid approaching the edges above the canyon. The narrow ledges consist of soft, brittle rock that may crumble under a person’s weight.

Located just 50 kilometers from Aktau, Ybykty is accessible by car, though the road detours, extending the drive to 160 kilometers (130 km on asphalt and the last 30 km on a hard dirt road). On the way, travelers can also visit the underground Karaman-Ata Mosque, known for its unique design.
