Independence Park in Shymkent was officially inaugurated in 2011, marking the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence. This popular spot in the historic heart of Shymkent draws locals and tourists alike to celebrate the nation’s spirit.
The park’s entrance is grand and ceremonial, with massive white marble columns supporting a stately portico. Golden numbers marking the years «1991» and «2011» shine on matching marble walls flanking the entrance.
The centerpiece of the park is the towering “Altyn Shanyrak” monument, a 300-meter-high structure composed of 137 metal elements. Each element represents one of the many ethnic groups that call Kazakhstan home, and together, they create a striking silhouette reminiscent of a colossal torch. By night, the monument is illuminated, and its fiery glow truly resembles a giant flame lighting up the Shymkent sky.
Visitors first encounter an avenue lined with steles commemorating key moments in the nation’s journey from 1991 to 2011. This pathway is a meaningful introduction to the park, leading visitors into an immersive experience. At any hour, the “Singing Fountain” enchants park-goers, with its evening light display creating a magical effect. Artful details such as DNA-like lampposts, architectural sculptures, benches, pathways, and colorful flower beds filled with Dutch blooms complete the park’s tranquil atmosphere. Near the heart of the park, an immense flagpole proudly displays the national flag of Kazakhstan, alongside a monument honoring the legendary Kazakh warrior, Kabanbai Batyr.
Reaching Independence Park is convenient from OrdaBasy Square, where a set of stairs leads up and transitions into a bridge. From this vantage point, visitors are treated to a panoramic view of Shymkent and nearby landmarks, setting the stage for an inspiring visit to this beloved national park.
