Flowing through the heart of Shymkent, the Koshkar-Ata River is a true blessing for this hot and sun-drenched city. Locals enjoy strolling along its embankment, with many taking the opportunity to cool off in its waters. Historically, people considered the river sacred, and many still believe in its healing properties. Unfortunately, the river now faces pollution challenges, and the reverence once held for it has somewhat waned.
In 2023, the embankment underwent significant renovations: the riverbed was cleaned, banks were fortified with stones, new bridges were constructed, and walkways were paved. Alongside the river, new sports and playgrounds, changing rooms, restrooms, gazebos, lifeguard stations, and informational signs detailing the water’s composition were added. This restored stretch of the embankment now spans about 1.5 kilometers.
The river takes its name from the legendary Sufi, Koshkar-Ata, who lived in the 12th century. It’s said that Koshkar-Ata was a disciple of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, had the power to heal people, and could even understand the language of animals. His profound knowledge of the Quran and hadith earned him the respect of his people, and he was eventually appointed as a judge. To this day, he is revered by many as a saint.
According to legend, Koshkar-Ata passed away in Shymkent and was buried near the river’s source, which flows through the city. Later, a mausoleum was erected over his grave, becoming a popular pilgrimage site. People came to this holy place seeking miraculous healing and fulfillment of their wishes.
Originally, the mausoleum stood near the railway station. However, in the 1960s, as the station square underwent development, the mausoleum was dismantled and relocated. The new mausoleum is more modest and situated closer to OrdaBasy Square, yet it remains a beloved and frequently visited site to this day.
