The «Bibikhonum» Museum in the administrative center of Khatlon, located in the city of Bokhtar, has been temporarily closed by the city authorities due to the deteriorating condition of the building. The local government is actively working on a comprehensive reconstruction and redevelopment plan for both the museum and the hill on which it stands. Architects have been tasked with designing a new structure that preserves the hill’s historical and cultural significance.
The «Bibikhonum» Museum is a city museum situated in the heart of Bokhtar. It is located within Kurghan Hill, one of Bokhtar’s most notable historical and cultural landmarks, which also serves as a symbol of the city. Before the 1990s, the hill was home to a park and a traditional national teahouse. Following the civil war, the area was redeveloped, and the museum was built on the site where the teahouse once stood.
The museum has garnered significant popularity among the local population, attracting many visitors with its extensive collection. The museum houses approximately 700 exhibits, offering a detailed narrative of the region’s history. Visitors to the museum can explore the history of life in Kurghan-Tyube, both in ancient times and in the modern era. Among the museum’s most notable features are the dioramas «Teppai Kurgon» and «Rastai Kosibon.» These displays offer a visual journey through the history of the Vakhsh Valley, beginning with scenes of sun-scorched earth and passing caravans, and transitioning to a panoramic view of the valley as it appears today, dotted with cities and modern structures.
The museum’s collection also provides an in-depth look at traditional Tajik crafts, showcasing examples of embroidery, ceramics, woodwork, and copper items, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region.
