At the intersection of Rudaki Street and Ismaili Somoni Avenue lies the lush and picturesque Ismaili Somoni Square. This vibrant area is renowned for its stunning views, elegant fountains, well-tended flower beds, and evergreen fir trees.
As the oldest square in the capital, it is named after Ismaili Somoni, the ruler of the Samanid dynasty, who founded the first Tajik state. During the Soviet era, the square was named after revolutionary leader Ch.A. Putovsky, who led efforts in the 1920s to suppress the Basmachi movement in Central Asia. However, after Tajikistan gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the square was renamed to honor Ismaili Somoni.
In the Soviet period, the square was home to the Central Committee of the Communist Party, a building that later became the Presidential Palace, the official residence of the President of Tajikistan. Constructed in 1985, this grand structure is an architectural masterpiece, combining traditional Central Asian design elements with Russian classical influences. It stands as a monumental symbol of the square and is its most prominent feature.
The square is further adorned by rows of lush, evergreen firs and two symmetrically placed fountains, surrounded by vibrant flowers. For many years, Ismaili Somoni Square has been a favorite gathering spot for both residents and visitors of Dushanbe. In the evenings, the square comes alive with artists and performers, making it a hub for social events, meetings, celebrations, and concerts.
