Mug Teppa was stormed by Alexander the Great in 329 BC and by the Arabs in AD 772. Only minimal traces of the original mud walls remain. This was the site of a city founded by Cyrus the Great, and it was beneath these cliffs that Alexander the Great was wounded. The natural hills above the city form a distinct «gateway» that separates Istaravshan from the valley.
