The Fann Mountains, or the Fanns, are one of the most spectacular regions in Central Asia, situated in Tajikistan at the intersection of two colossal ranges of the Pamir-Alay mountain system—the Zarafshan and Gissar ranges. Located not far from the historic city of Samarkand, the Fann Mountains offer a landscape that seems almost otherworldly, with their ancient glaciers, emerald and turquoise lakes, fast-flowing rivers, and sharp peaks. Known in ancient times as Kuhistan, meaning «Land of Mountains» in Persian, this area is a true haven for mountaineers, trekkers, and extreme sports enthusiasts. The region boasts eight peaks exceeding 5,000 meters, with Chimtarga Peak, the tallest at 5,487 meters, standing just shy of the height of Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus.
