Ishkashim, a small yet significant settlement, marks the beginning of the legendary Wakhan Corridor, where the Pamir Highway takes a southern turn. Nestled at an altitude of 2,500 meters above sea level, this picturesque village is surrounded by the towering peaks of the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains. Home to around 2,900 residents, most of whom identify as Pamirians, Ishkashim lies on the border with Afghanistan. The Panj River acts as a natural divide, separating it from its Afghan counterpart, a village with the same name. A bridge connects the two settlements, and on occasion, Sunday markets are held here, offering a rare cross-border interaction.

The name “Ishkashim” holds historical significance. Some linguists believe it evolved from the toponym “Shikashim,” which itself may be derived from the Indo-Aryan terms “Saka” and “sim,” meaning “Land of the Saka.” This theory is supported by historical evidence, as the Saka tribes are known to have once inhabited the Wakhan Corridor.

Ishkashim is not just a border village; it serves as an essential stopover for those journeying along the Pamir Highway. Located 110 kilometers south of Khorog, it offers a brief respite for travelers exploring the remote and rugged beauty of the region. While the village itself lacks major tourist attractions, its charm lies in its simplicity and authenticity.

The local bazaar is one of Ishkashim’s few highlights. Held on Sundays, though not every week, the market is a lively affair where visitors can browse a variety of goods, including vegetables, fruits, and Afghan clothing, fabrics, and scarves. It’s a place where local culture comes alive, and a visit here offers insight into the daily lives of the people who call this remote village home.

For those eager to explore the area, there are a few noteworthy sites just beyond the village. Approximately 15 kilometers to the east lies the ancient Kakh-Kakha Fortress. Though timeworn, the ruins of this fortress offer a glimpse into the region’s storied past and its strategic importance in guarding the trade routes that once passed through these mountains.

Adventure seekers and trekking enthusiasts may also find Ishkashim a great starting point for hiking. The nearby Mayakovsky Peak, towering above the village, presents a challenging yet rewarding trek. From its summit, hikers are treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Wakhan Valley and Ishkashim itself, making the climb a must for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the region.
