Your adventure begins at 9:00 AM, when our professional driver and guide greet you at your hotel in Tbilisi. After a brief introduction, you’ll set off toward the Sadakhlo-Bagratashen border, where you’ll cross into Armenia and enter the tranquil Lori region—a landscape known for its lush greenery, dramatic gorges, and sacred monasteries.
Your first stop is the Haghpat Monastery, a masterpiece of medieval Armenian architecture built between the 10th and 13th centuries. Perched on a hillside overlooking the Debed River, the monastery was founded as a place of learning and quiet monastic life. The complex includes multiple chapels, a bell tower, and the majestic Cathedral of Surb Nshan, renowned for its detailed fresco of Christ Pantocrator. The location was intentionally chosen for its seclusion and inspiring natural surroundings.
After exploring Haghpat, prepare for a memorable 12-kilometer hike to Sanahin Monastery, following a historic trail once used by monks and pilgrims. This 4-hour hike, considered moderate in difficulty, winds through forest paths, open meadows, and scenic viewpoints. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in nature, surrounded by the serene beauty of the Armenian highlands.
Upon arrival at Sanahin, you’ll be rewarded with a visit to one of Armenia’s most esteemed monastic complexes. Sanahin was an intellectual hub during the Middle Ages, home to a renowned school of calligraphy and manuscript illumination. Its name, which translates as “this one is older than that one,” reflects its earlier construction relative to neighboring Haghpat. The grounds are adorned with khachkars (intricately carved cross-stones) dating from the 11th to 13th centuries, offering a deep connection to Armenia’s spiritual and artistic traditions.
At approximately 5:00 PM, begin your return journey to Tbilisi, where our driver will drop you off at your hotel, concluding an inspiring day of hiking, history, and cultural discovery.
