Discover the timeless soul of Armenia on this one-day cultural escape from Yerevan. Journey through the heart of the Ararat Valley and explore three extraordinary destinations that tell the story of a land where faith, history, and nature meet. Begin at the iconic Khor Virap Monastery, where the story of Armenia’s adoption of Christianity unfolds against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Ararat. Continue to the majestic Noravank Monastery, nestled among fiery-red cliffs, where medieval architecture and raw landscapes create unforgettable harmony. Your final stop is Areni Cave, an ancient archaeological site where the world’s oldest leather shoe was unearthed — a window into life over 5,500 years ago.
Your journey begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Yerevan, where you’ll meet your professional guide and driver who will accompany you throughout the day. The route leads south-east, into the heart of Armenia’s ancient lands—an area rich with early Christian heritage and dramatic landscapes.
The first stop is the legendary Khor Virap Monastery, located just a short distance from the Turkish border. This sacred site holds profound historical and spiritual significance for Armenians. Built above a deep dungeon—hence the name “Khor Virap,” meaning “deep pit”—the monastery marks the place where St. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years by King Tiridates III for preaching Christianity. His eventual release led to Armenia becoming the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD. From the monastery grounds, take in panoramic views of Mount Ararat, the biblical resting place of Noah’s Ark, rising majestically across the border.
Continue your journey through the Vayots Dzor region, driving along winding mountain roads toward the stunning Noravank Monastic Complex, nestled on a ledge within a dramatic gorge. Surrounded by sheer, flame-colored cliffs, Noravank is not only known for its breathtaking location but also for its fine examples of medieval Armenian architecture and intricate stone carvings. The two-tiered Surb Astvatsatsin Church, designed by the master architect Momik in the 13th century, is a highlight with its iconic narrow staircase leading to the upper chapel.
Your final destination is the Areni-1 Cave Complex, a fascinating archaeological site that sheds light on life in the region thousands of years ago. Discovered in 2007 and excavated in 2008, the cave revealed the oldest known leather shoe in the world, dating back over 5,500 years. It also yielded the world’s earliest known winery, evidence of early human rituals, and well-preserved artifacts that speak to the ingenuity of prehistoric cultures.
After exploring the cave and the surrounding area—possibly including a visit to a nearby local winery in the Areni village—you’ll begin the return journey to Yerevan. The day concludes with a drop-off at your hotel in the capital city, filled with impressions of Armenia’s deep history and extraordinary natural beauty.

This tour was the absolute highlight of my trip to Armenia. The day was perfectly paced and filled with unforgettable stops. Khor Virap’s view of Mount Ararat took my breath away—pictures don’t do it justice. Noravank was just as spectacular, nestled among glowing red cliffs. I especially enjoyed learning about the early Christian roots of Armenia, which our guide explained with great passion. The visit to the Areni Cave was fascinating, particularly hearing about the 6,000-year-old shoe! I also appreciated the thoughtful organization of Shahina Travel. Everything—from transport to timing—was smooth and professional. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Armenia!
I really enjoyed the tour to Khor Virap, Noravank, and Areni. Armenia’s landscapes and ancient sites left a deep impression on me. The guide was friendly, very knowledgeable, and made the history come alive. Khor Virap’s religious significance was inspiring, especially knowing the story of St. Gregory. Noravank was beautiful and peaceful, and Areni Cave added a unique archaeological touch to the tour. I also liked the wine tasting in Areni village—it was a pleasant surprise! Thank you for such a well-planned and memorable experience. I would love to come back and explore more of this amazing country.
