Route in brief:

Tbilisi – Haghpat Monastery – Alaverdi – Odzun Church – Tbilisi

Embark on an unforgettable day trip from Tbilisi to discover the spiritual and cultural heart of northern Armenia. This immersive tour takes you deep into the lush Lori region, home to some of the most treasured medieval monasteries in the Caucasus. Begin your journey with a visit to Akhtala Monastery, a dramatic 13th-century complex perched on a cliff, known for its vivid frescoes and unique architectural style. Continue to Haghpat Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers breathtaking views over the Debed River and houses centuries-old religious art and intricate stonework. Enjoy a delicious traditional Armenian lunch at a local hotel before heading to Sanahin Monastery, once a renowned center of learning during the Middle Ages. Surrounded by khachkars (cross-stones) and rich history, Sanahin reflects the depth of Armenia’s cultural legacy. After a full day of exploration, return to Tbilisi filled with memories of sacred sites and scenic wonders.

Your full-day cultural adventure begins at 9:00 AM, when our experienced guide and driver meet you at your hotel in Tbilisi. You’ll set off toward the Sadakhlo-Bagratashen border crossing, where you’ll complete the border formalities and officially step into Armenia—a land steeped in spiritual heritage and ancient traditions.

Your first stop is the Akhtala Monastery, an impressive 13th-century fortress-monastery perched dramatically on a cliffside. This remarkable site is famed for its vivid and well-preserved frescoes, as well as its unique blend of Armenian and Byzantine architectural influences. The peaceful surroundings and intricate stone carvings offer an inspiring introduction to Armenia’s ecclesiastical art.

Next, continue your drive through the scenic Lori region, arriving at the magnificent Haghpat Monastery, recognized by UNESCO for its historical and architectural significance. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, this monastery complex is nestled on a hillside overlooking the Debed River. Designed to serve as a secluded refuge for monastic life, Haghpat’s standout feature is the Cathedral of Surb Nishan, which houses a breathtaking fresco of Christ Pantocrator.

Around midday, enjoy a traditional Armenian lunch at the nearby Qefilyan Hotel, where you’ll be treated to regional dishes in a warm and hospitable setting.

Following lunch, travel a short distance (approximately 15 kilometers, or 15 minutes) to the Sanahin Monastery, Haghpat’s historic counterpart. Believed to predate its neighbor—hence its name Sanahin, meaning “this one is older than that one”—Sanahin was a prominent center for education and manuscript illumination during the Middle Ages. The complex is adorned with khachkars, beautifully carved Armenian cross-stones from the 11th to 13th centuries, offering a glimpse into the rich spiritual and artistic heritage of medieval Armenia.

After a full day of discovery, you will return to the Georgian border and continue back to Tbilisi, where you will be dropped off at your hotel in the early evening—carrying with you the unforgettable memories of northern Armenia’s sacred sites and serene landscapes.

Tour Duration: Approximately 9–10 hours
Note: Sanahin Monastery is currently undergoing renovation but remains open for visitation.
