Your guide will greet you at your hotel in Kutaisi to begin this delightful one-day journey through the city’s vibrant streets and sacred landmarks. Our tour begins on foot in the historic heart of Kutaisi, the capital of the Imereti region and one of Georgia’s most ancient cities, with roots dating back to the times of Colchis and the Argonauts.
Our first stop is the Bagrati Cathedral, a masterpiece of 11th-century architecture dramatically situated atop Ukimerioni Hill. Recently reconstructed, it offers sweeping panoramic views over the city and the Rioni River below. After soaking in the views, we’ll stroll through Kutaisi’s lively center, weaving between old cobblestone alleys and modern streets lined with elegant architecture.
You’ll enjoy a walk through Kutaisi Central Park, home to whimsical sculptures, and pass by the dazzling Colchis Fountain—adorned with golden replicas of ancient artifacts. We’ll visit the grand Drama Theater, and make our way to the bustling Green Bazaar, where locals gather to sell everything from fresh produce and spices to homemade jams and Imeretian cheeses.
As we continue, you’ll see Okros Chardakhi, the former royal residence of Imereti kings, and pause under the shade of a centuries-old plane tree. For those interested, we can visit the Holy Annunciation Temple and Kutaisi Synagogue, each bearing witness to the city’s diverse religious heritage.
After lunch at a local café or restaurant, we’ll leave the city and venture into the surrounding hills to visit Gelati Monastery and Academy. Founded in the 12th century by King David the Builder, Gelati became a prominent center of education, religion, and science in medieval Georgia. Marvel at its impressive frescoes, stone masonry, and tranquil spiritual atmosphere.
Our final destination is the enchanting Motsameta Monastery, nestled dramatically above a bend of the Rioni River. Surrounded by lush forest and steeped in legend, it’s one of the most photogenic and peaceful spots in western Georgia.
Optional Add-On: Conclude your day with a traditional Imeretian dinner in a welcoming Kutaisi home-restaurant, where you’ll sample local dishes and sip homemade wine. Please reserve in advance due to limited seating.
