Dashkala, an ancient settlement from the pre-Mongol era of Gurgandzh, is an intriguing historical site characterized by its polygonal shape and fortified defenses. This ancient stronghold is encircled by a substantial moat and a towering rampart, with the foundation marked by the remnants of a burnt-brick wall. Among its ruins are notable structures such as the remnants of the «Gate of the Caravan Serai,» the minaret of Mamun, and the Dzhuma Mosque.
The «Gate of the Caravan Serai,» or peshtak, is particularly noteworthy for its intricate decoration. The structure features finely carved bricks in natural beige tones, adorned with elaborate patterns in dark blue, white, and turquoise. Many scholars suggest that this peshtak is too elaborate for a mere caravan serai and was likely part of a significant palace or a major madrasah. Historical records confirm that Tamerlane deliberately destroyed the original structure, and subsequently, a caravan serai was constructed around the remaining portal.
Throughout its history, Dashkala in Kunya-Urgench thrived during the Mongol, Timurid, and post-Timurid periods, each era leaving its mark on the ancient settlement.
