As of the 2019 census, Turkmenistan’s population stands at approximately 5,942,089 individuals, reflecting a population density of around 10.5 people per square kilometer. This density varies significantly across different regions of the country.
The most densely populated areas are found in the southern, eastern, and northeastern parts of Turkmenistan, particularly within the fertile oases. These regions, characterized by their more hospitable climates and better water availability, naturally support larger communities. Conversely, the western parts of the country, which encompass more arid desert landscapes, and central desert areas have much lower population densities. In these remote regions, the population density can be as sparse as one person per several square kilometers.
Turkmenistan is a multi-ethnic nation with a diverse demographic composition. The majority ethnic group are the Turkmen, who make up about 85% of the population. The Turkmen are part of the Trans-Caspian race of South Europids, generally characterized by tall stature, elongated heads, narrow faces, high foreheads, and darker hair and eyes. Mongoloid features are minimal among this group.
