Tasharvat Caravanserai

Tasharvat Caravanserai: A Historical Oasis on the Great Silk Road

Perched 20 meters above sea level in the Tashravat area, near a spring, lies the ancient Tasharvat Caravanserai. Located 216 meters southeast of the Jebel-Oglanly highway, it is 18.3 kilometers northeast of Jebel city, 14.6 kilometers southwest of Oglanly village, and 26.4 kilometers north of Balkanabat city, within the administrative region of Balkanabat in the Balkan Velayat.

The caravanserai is a rectangular fortress enclosed by stone walls, with the remnants of a residential building inside. The northern wall of the caravanserai is semi-oval and extends for 50 meters, while the eastern wall spans 25 meters. Its strategic position along one of the ancient caravan routes in the Greater Balkhan region suggests that it may have been part of the many branches of the historic Silk Road.

During the era of the Silk Road, the Tasharvat Caravanserai served as an essential stopover for caravans on their long journeys. Approximately 175 meters to the northwest lies a seasonal riverbed oasis, now home to a spring and a small roadside café. According to local legend, a grove of 100 elms once surrounded the caravanserai.

The first recorded mentions of the Tasharvat fortification date back to 1871-1872. Archaeological research indicates that the structure was still inhabited in the late 19th century.
