Nestled in the Sari-Shoto Pass near Baysun, Uzbekistan, lies Teshik-Tash, a site of immense cultural, spiritual, and historical significance. Known as the «Holed Stone» in Turkic, Teshik-Tash is a natural wonder revered by the local Uzbek people. The site comprises a large stone with a naturally formed hole, surrounded by smaller white stones, creating a breathtaking spectacle shaped by millennia of natural forces.

For generations, Teshik-Tash has been venerated as a holy site with purported healing properties. Local legends, passed down through the ages, tell of the stone’s miraculous powers. According to these tales, mothers bring their sick children to the stone and pass them through the hole, believing that this ritual will cure their ailments. This tradition has cemented Teshik-Tash’s reputation as a place of hope and healing for the local community.

Teshik-Tash is not only a site of spiritual importance but also a landmark in the field of archaeology. In 1938, the renowned Central Asian archaeologist Michael E. Masson made a groundbreaking discovery in the Teshik-Tash Cave. During his excavations, Masson unearthed the remains of a Neanderthal child, estimated to be between 9 and 10 years old. This discovery provided invaluable insights into the life and rituals of early human ancestors.

The excavation revealed that the child’s burial was accompanied by animal bones, suggesting a ritualistic aspect to the interment. This finding was significant in understanding the cultural and spiritual practices of Neanderthals. The famous Russian anthropologist Mikhail M. Gerasimov later reconstructed the appearance of the Neanderthal boy from his skull, and a sculptural portrait of the child can now be seen at the Termez Museum.
