The Bolo-Khauz Complex is a significant historical and architectural monument located on Registan Square in Bukhara. It is the only preserved structure on the square and is situated opposite the Ark, the Emir’s fortress. The complex comprises three main components: a reservoir, a Friday mosque, and a minaret.

The oldest part of the complex is the pond, known as Bolo-Khauz, which translates to «Children’s Reservoir.» This pond is one of the few remaining reservoirs in Bukhara that have survived to the present day. Historically, these reservoirs were essential sources of water for the local population. However, they also became sources of various diseases, leading to the drainage of most of them over time.

The Bolo-Khauz Mosque was constructed in 1712 by the order of the Emir’s wife. Another legend suggests that Emir Shakhmurad, who ruled from 1785 to 1800, built the mosque for public prayers because he enjoyed being among the common people. The mosque features a traditional ayvan (veranda) with a wooden ceiling supported by elegantly carved columns. The ceiling is richly decorated with intricate fretwork and adorned with floral and geometric ornamental patterns.

In 1917, a short minaret was added to the complex by Shirin Muradov, a renowned master craftsman from Bukhara. This minaret complements the architectural beauty of the mosque and adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the complex.

The Bolo-Khauz Complex’s historical significance and unique architectural features make it a key destination for visitors interested in exploring the history and culture of the region. The combination of the reservoir, mosque, and minaret within the complex provides a glimpse into the past and highlights the importance of such structures in the daily lives of the people of Bukhara.
