Among the unusual monuments of Bukhara, the Chor-Minor madrasah stands out prominently. Located just behind Lyabi-Khauz in an open space, the name «Chor-Minor» translates to «four minarets,» which is a fitting description. The corners of the square-rectangular madrasah building are adorned with four small minarets, each crowned with blue domes that differ in their decorative elements.
Each of the four minarets has a unique shape, and their decorative elements are believed to symbolize the religious and philosophical understanding of the world’s four major religions. Observers can easily identify elements resembling a cross, a Christian fish, and a Buddhist prayer wheel among the decorations.
In front of the madrasah building, there is a patio with a centrally located small basin, known as a hauz, which is lined with stone blocks. Several hujrs (small rooms) are adjacent to the sides of the madrasah, adding to the architectural complexity of the structure.
