Chor-Minor madrasah, Bukhara

Among the unusual monuments of Bukhara, the Chor-Minor madrasah stands out prominently. Located just behind Lyabi-Khauz in an open space, the name «Chor-Minor» translates to «four minarets,» which is a fitting description. The corners of the square-rectangular madrasah building are adorned with four small minarets, each crowned with blue domes that differ in their decorative elements.

Each of the four minarets has a unique shape, and their decorative elements are believed to symbolize the religious and philosophical understanding of the world’s four major religions. Observers can easily identify elements resembling a cross, a Christian fish, and a Buddhist prayer wheel among the decorations.

In front of the madrasah building, there is a patio with a centrally located small basin, known as a hauz, which is lined with stone blocks. Several hujrs (small rooms) are adjacent to the sides of the madrasah, adding to the architectural complexity of the structure.

The madrasah is a well-preserved building, constructed with the financial support of the wealthy Turkmen Caliph Niyazkul. While the date of the madrasah’s construction is often cited as 1807, archival documents suggest that the Caliph Niyazkul madrasah existed as early as the late 17th century.

The unique design and the symbolic representation of different religions make The Chor-Minor madrasah a significant landmark. Visitors to the Chor-Minor madrasah can appreciate the intricate architectural details and the historical significance of this well-preserved monument, which continues to be a testament to the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Bukhara over the centuries.
